Often times in life we find ourselves in a place that is less than desirable, but even the thought of change seems overwhelming. Maybe you want to lose a few pounds, start a business or change some aspect of your life. You have an idea of where you want to go and what it takes to get there, but the motivation is nonexistent.
The good news is you’re not alone and we’ve all been there. The better news is it’s never too late to get back into gear. With a few steps and a concrete decision to commit, you’ll be well on your way to building positive momentum in the direction of your goals. Next time you find yourself in a rut, refer to these 3 steps.
1. Soften the resistance
The more time goes by, the more the resistance builds to get started. You promise yourself you are going to hit the gym or cook a healthy meal but the days go by and you’re still stuck at square one. You literally feel like you are “pushing against” instead of being “pulled” to start. I refer to this concept as push and pull.
Motivation (push) is an exhaustible resource, it will run out! This feels like you’re swimming against the current. This forceful method of getting things done will drain you and eventually spit you back where you started. Next time you’re faced with resistance, welcome it in. The more you fight it, the bigger it grows. Make friends with it; accept it; soften the edges and melt with it. It’s ok to be where you are right now, in this moment.
After you soften the resistance, you can flip the switch and get inspired (pulled) to do something. This is when lasting change will begin. Think about WHY you want to accomplish (x) goal. What feeling are you after? How will it affect your life? Who will it impact? Get specific and get excited about it. Positive anticipation = inspiration.
Resistance may never truly go away, but once you’ve established a new habit or begin taking action towards your end goal, it will get easier. Even the best of the best are confronted with resistance on a daily basis; the only difference is they still take action.
2. Decide, Commit and Believe
Until you make an unwavering decision to commit to a goal, you will forever be trailing aimlessly. Goals lead us to expansion and growth, even if they are seemingly small and minor. When you have something to work towards and know that you’re taking even the smallest steps to get there, you’ll feel that satisfaction and fulfillment.
Decide what it is you actually want and commit to moving in the direction of it, no matter how challenging it may be. Expect roadblocks and days where you just don’t want to, but choose to slow down, not stop. Once you’ve built the momentum you don’t want to lose traction.
If you don’t believe you can do it you won’t. If you do believe you can do it you will. It’s plain and simple, black and white and it’s all mindset.
3. Take action
Choose one action step you can take that will get you closer to your goal and commit to consistency. Think about what will have the biggest impact in your daily life. Is it quitting sugar? Working out for a half hour every day? Spending 20 minutes a day writing your blog? It doesn’t matter how big or small, as long as you are consistent. Small changes will lead to big results.
The power of change is always in your hands. The trick is to simply get the ball rolling. It can take one work out, one healthy meal or just one day listening to your body to make the shift. We’re always a lot closer than we think we are.
The time is going to pass anyway — how are you going to spend it? How is your life going to look 6 months from now if nothing changes? 1 year? 5 years? Your time is NOW and you are worth it!
