What is a lunch buddy? It’s a lunch program set up with the Wenatchee Learns Connect via the Wenatchee School District. It’s a way to be a positive mentor for children in our local elementary schools. It only takes a minimum of one hour a week to meet with your buddy. These kids look so forward to having an adult be there for them during their combined lunch and recess.
I am on my second year with the program. My partner has joined this program as well. He has a great time with his buddy knowing he is making a huge positive impact in his life.
The students are selected by the school counselor based on personal needs. As a mentor, you can share your life experiences, talents and wisdom. Helping to encourage, build self-esteem and see their smiles makes it all worth it and one of the most rewarding experiences I have participated in. I will continue to be a part of this program as long as I am able to.
Last year at my last lunch buddy meeting for the school year, my little second grade buddy asked me if I could be his lunch buddy all the way through college. That about melted my heart. I told him that I would.
If you are interested in becoming a buddy, please contact Wenatchee Learns for more information. And I am happy to answer any other questions about my personal experience.
